Library Updates
SEPTEMBER 9, 2026
The library will be closed today, Wednesday, September 9th, due to a municipal water main break outside the library on 31st Street.
We are legally unable to open without flushing toilets and running water, and there is no estimate on when the issue will be resolved. During the water main break a few weeks ago, water was not restored until late in the evening.
For these reasons, the library will be unfortunately closed today.
We invite you to visit our friends at the Crete Public Library or the Park Forest Public Library if you have library business today. We look forward to reopening tomorrow.
This has been a rough summer for our neighborhood's electrical grid, water supply, and phone/internet lines. Thanks for bearing with us.

Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library Begins Major Building Repairs and Exterior Upgrades
Construction is officially underway at the Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library District, marking the start of essential structural repairs and exterior enhancements designed to preserve the building for decades to come.
Key improvements include:
- Metal Siding Installation: The failing Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS), which had reached the end of its lifespan, is being replaced at the top of the building with durable, long-lasting tan metal siding—a design choice long-time residents will recognize as a nod to the library's original aesthetic.
- Masonry & Roofing Fixes: Contractors will perform tuckpointing on the masonry work along with targeted roof repairs to safeguard the structure. Concrete walls and exterior finish will be painted in a complementary tan.
- Concrete Restoration: Walkways, entry concrete, and front pillars are being repaired to improve accessibility and safety.
This project is entirely funded by savings and grants, incurring no additional costs to taxpayers.
Construction Schedule
Construction is slated to run through the summer with completion expected in the late fall. The library will remain open and business will continue as usual throughout the project.
Celebrating 50 Years
As work progresses, community members are invited to look forward to a special celebration at the conclusion of construction in the fall, which will double as a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library District, which was founded in 1976.
The architects for this project are Williams Architects, and the project is being completed by Algat Enterprises. For updates and questions about the construction project, contact Jessica Rodrigues at director@sschlibrary.org.
