Library Updates
WEDNESDAY JULY 29, 2026
The library is open and has power!
The library is open following roofing repairs and power restoration. Unfortunately, we still do not have phone or internet service. We are able to check out items and our copy machine is working, however we are unable to print or fax. Items checked out or returned during this time will not be reflected on your online account, but don't worry - no items returned during this period will be marked as late.
When will the internet be back?
The problem appears to be related to physical damage to the exterior Xfinity equipment and will need to be repaired by Xfinity. They do not yet have an estimated date or time for the repairs.
Where else can I go to print or use computers?
Many other libraries in our area are also currently affected by storm damage or outages to their power or internet. The closest library to ours that currently has power and internet service is the Park Forest Public Library. You can visit their website here to find their hours and address: www.pfpl.org
Program Cancellations
More repairs need to be done during this week due to interior leaks so we have had to cancel Messy Play on 7/29 and Senior Bingo on 7/30. We apologize for the short notice.
TUESDAY JULY 28, 2026
The library is unexpectedly closed today due to damage sustained during the heavy storms. We experienced a power outage, phone/internet outage, and significant flooding inside the library. We have closed to the public for emergency roofing repairs and interior cleanup.
MONDAY JULY 27, 2026
The library has planned a closure today for repairs to the concrete walkway in front of the building.

Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library Begins Major Building Repairs and Exterior Upgrades
Construction is officially underway at the Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library District, marking the start of essential structural repairs and exterior enhancements designed to preserve the building for decades to come.
Key improvements include:
- Metal Siding Installation: The failing Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS), which had reached the end of its lifespan, is being replaced at the top of the building with durable, long-lasting tan metal siding—a design choice long-time residents will recognize as a nod to the library's original aesthetic.
- Masonry & Roofing Fixes: Contractors will perform tuckpointing on the masonry work along with targeted roof repairs to safeguard the structure. Concrete walls and exterior finish will be painted in a complementary tan.
- Concrete Restoration: Walkways, entry concrete, and front pillars are being repaired to improve accessibility and safety.
This project is entirely funded by savings and grants, incurring no additional costs to taxpayers.
Construction Schedule
Construction is slated to run through the summer with completion expected in the fall. The library will remain open and business will continue as usual throughout the project, with one brief exception: the library will be closed on Monday, July 27th for concrete repairs directly in front of the main entrance.
Celebrating 50 Years
As work progresses, community members are invited to look forward to a special celebration at the conclusion of construction in the fall, which will double as a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library District, which was founded in 1976.
The architects for this project are Williams Architects, and the project is being completed by Algat Enterprises. For updates and questions about the construction project, contact Jessica Rodrigues at director@sschlibrary.org.
