Job Opening: Head of Youth Services
The Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library is a small library in the far south suburbs of Chicago with a friendly staff, supportive patrons, and a positive atmosphere. We are looking for a creative and kind Head of Youth Services to join our team.
Your average day will be spent planning and presenting programming for youth patrons, providing public service in the Youth Services Department, and managing the youth collection. You'll collaborate with other departments on family and all ages programming and sometimes visit local schools or daycares. Two part time Youth Library Assistants will report to you.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or certificate equivalent
- Bachelor's degree or Masters Degree in Library Science preferred.
- One year of work experience with children required.
- Prior library supervisory experience desired.
- Valid driver’s license.
RESPONSIBILITIES (Illustrative, not inclusive)
- Provide public service in the Youth Services Department, which includes answering
- reference and readers’ advisory questions for all ages.
- Responsible for selection, ordering, and weeding of the Youth Services circulating and reference collections for print and non-print materials.
- Plan and present programming for youth and parents, which may include Storytime, summer reading and related other activities.
- Prepare publicity for youth services programs including information for the library’s newsletters.
- Programming responsibilities include outreach visits to schools and teachers
- meetings; work within the community to create cooperation with schools and other organizations and groups.
- Maintain specialized collections such as puzzles.
- Maintain displays and bulletin boards in the youth services department.
- Assist with the hiring, training, and evaluation of department staff.
- Record statistics and evaluate youth services.
- Attend related workshops and meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- May substitute at the Circulation Desk.
- May assist in drafting children’s library service policies.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Assists and instructs patrons in using library services, equipment and facilities.
- Must carry out emergency procedures as necessary.
- Have the ability to maintain confidentiality of information according to state statute and professional library ethics.
- Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher
- Ability to deal with associates and public in a courteous manner
- Responsible for reports as needed by the Director.
SCHEDULE (35 hours)
- Mondays | 12:00p-7:00p
- Tuesdays | 10:00a-5:00p
- Wednesdays | 12:00p-7:00p
- Thursdays | 10:00a-5:00p
- Fridays | 10:00a-5:00p
- Every 4th Saturday from 10:00a-5:00p; on this week you will be off on Monday.
- The library is closed on Sundays.
PAY & BENEFITS
- The current salary schedule for this position is $18.00 - $22.00.
- Paid holidays
- Accrue 1 sick day a month, 3 personal days a year, and 2 weeks vacation a year. (Additional week of vacation every 5 years, up to 4 weeks.)
- The Library will provide individual health insurance for FTE on a 85% employer-paid-basis of the HMO plan, up to $700 in total per month, on the date of hire. Health and life insurance coverage for dependents will be at the employee's expense.
- The library will pay 100% of the employee's vision and dental. Coverage for dependents will be at the employee's expense.
